Commissioning the M‑Center: the first steps

From the 230 V supply and the service port to M-Bus, Modbus and MQTT – step by step and with animations. The information comes from the EMU M-Center manual.

Overview

What do I need for commissioning?

A laptop and a network cable are enough for the first steps. The M-Center sits on the DIN rail and is normally supplied with 230 V AC.

  • 230 V AC supply (100–240 V AC, at least 1 A) on the Supply terminal at the bottom left
  • Laptop with a network port and a current browser
  • Network cable (RJ45) for the service port
  • Meters with M-Bus, Modbus RTU or Modbus TCP, for example EMU Professional II, Helvatron H2O or Helvatron DELTA III
  • Licences for the number of devices and protocols you need – expandable later as well

  1. Connect 230 V ACLine L and neutral N to the Supply terminal at the bottom left. The supply must deliver at least 1 A (100–240 V AC).
  2. Leave 24 V DC freeThe 24 V DC terminal at the top right is an alternative. Both supplies must never be connected at the same time.
  3. Switch on and check the LEDThe User status LED next to the Modbus terminals lights steady green when the M-Center is idle.
  4. On to the service portNow connect the laptop to the lower network port – see the next section.

The type of supply determines how heavily the M-Bus may be loaded. For large M-Bus installations we are glad to advise you on choosing between 230 V AC and 24 V DC.

Step 1

How do I connect to the service port?

The service port is the lower network port. It has the fixed address 169.254.254.1 and itself assigns an IP address to the connected laptop.

  1. Plug the cable into the service portThe M-Center has two RJ45 ports: the LAN at the top, the service port at the bottom for a direct connection to a laptop.
  2. Connect the laptopOn the service port the laptop automatically receives an IP address via DHCP. You do not need to change any network settings.
  3. Open the web interfaceEnter the fixed address http://169.254.254.1 in the browser.
  4. Log inFactory setting: username admin, password 123. Change the password after the first login.

Finding the M-Center in the company network

The upper port (LAN) is set to DHCP at the factory. If your computer is on the same network, find the IP address from the command prompt: ping -4 mcenter-<MAC address>.local – for the MAC address 10:2C:EF:12:34:56 that is ping -4 mcenter-102cef123456.local. The MAC address is also the serial number and is printed on the housing.

On Windows computers it also works without the command prompt: in Explorer under Network, the M-Center appears in the Network Infrastructure category.

You set a fixed IP address under Settings → Network with manual configuration: IP address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS server.

Step 2

How do I read in the M-Bus devices?

The M-Center searches for the connected meters itself. It is important to set time and time zone correctly first – otherwise the time stamps will be wrong.

  1. First: time and time zoneUnder Settings → General Settings, enter an NTP server (e.g. ch.pool.ntp.org) and the time zone. Activate the option to interpret time and date values from M-Bus readings before adding the first devices.
  2. Connect the metersConnect the EMU Professional II, Helvatron H2O and Helvatron DELTA III with two wires to the blue M-BUS Master terminals. Star, bus or tree are possible, a ring is not.
  3. Set up the scanSettings → Scan: baud rate 2400 (recommended), addressing by secondary address. Reading the data logger only applies to the EMU Professional II.
  4. Start the scanWith Scan the M-Center finds the meters and sorts them by medium: electricity, water, heat. Individual devices can also be added manually under Add M-Bus Devices.

Good to know

  • The default readout cycle is 15 minutes. If a complete pass takes longer, choose a longer interval or set it per device.
  • The M-Center reads only the licensed number of M-Bus devices. Any further devices on the bus are ignored but still add to the load.
  • For newly added EMU Professional II meters, the M-Center reads the entire data logger once – about eight days of data per hour at a 15-minute interval.
  • If a device does not appear in the expected category, its medium can be changed afterwards.
  • Star, bus and tree topologies are possible, a ring topology is not. Keep cables as short as possible.

Step 3

How do I integrate Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP?

Besides M-Bus, the M-Center reads Modbus devices – over two RS-485 lines or over the network with Modbus TCP. A ready-made Modbus driver is stored for the EMU Professional II.

  1. Wire Modbus RTUTwo lines with up to 32 devices each on the terminals at the top left. Shielded twisted-pair cable, shield to C (GND). 120 Ω at the end of the line – on the M-Center side the termination is already built in.
  2. Add an RTU deviceIn the device list, choose Modbus RTU via the plus symbol: Modbus driver (for the EMU Professional II “Template EMU Professional II TCP + RTU”), name, line, slave address and the interface parameters of the meter.
  3. Add a TCP deviceDevices with Modbus TCP are on the network at the LAN port. When adding them, enter the IP address, port and device address; for the EMU Professional II any device address from 0 to 255 works.
  4. Check the registersFurther registers can be added, for example active energy import: register 6004, uInt64, Wh, OBIS 1-0:1.8.1. Then validate the values and activate “Save in database”.

The registers of the EMU Professional II are listed in the Modbus interface manual for the Professional II (1485).

Step 4

How do I set up MQTT?

MQTT in brief

MQTT works on the publish and subscribe principle. The M-Center publishes its measured values to a broker; dashboards, control systems or cloud services subscribe there to exactly the topics they need. Sender and receiver do not need to know each other.

  • QoS 0 – at most once: without acknowledgement, fastest, usually sufficient.
  • QoS 1 – at least once: with acknowledgement; a message may arrive twice.
  • QoS 2 – exactly once: highest delivery guarantee, most overhead.

TLS encrypts the connection and uses a certificate to check that the broker is genuine. The insecure connection option switches this check off – only use it if there is no other way.

Settings → MQTT MQTT Hostnamebroker.your-company.com Port1883 Usermcenter Password•••••••• Prefix for all topics (optional)building-a Version5 QoS0 – at most once Save saved M-Center Broker Dashboard Control system / cloud subscribe to the topics building-a/emu/mcenter/ 10:2C:EF:12:34:56/meterreading/ 24201234/byregister/0 … /byobis/1-0:1.8.1
  1. Enter the brokerSettings → MQTT: host name and port of your MQTT broker.
  2. Credentials and prefixUser and password only if the broker requires them. The prefix is optional – the M-Center appears under it on the broker. Choose version 3.1, 3.1.1 or 5.
  3. SaveThe M-Center then sends the measured values to the broker. Dashboards, control systems or cloud services subscribe to them there.
  4. Reading the topicsPrefix / emu/mcenter / MAC address / meterreading / serial number of the meter / byregister/… or byobis/…. For “byobis”, OBIS codes must be stored with the registers.

Energy management

How does the data get into Joulio-Web?

The M-Center uploads the measured values directly into the energy management software Joulio-Web.

  1. Open Settings → Joulio-Web and activate the option.
  2. Upload the certificate file (.pem) you receive from Joulio-Web. Server URL and port are taken from it.
  3. Enter your client ID for Joulio-Web.
  4. Save – the automatic upload starts immediately.

Maintenance

How do I update the firmware?

  • Online: Under Settings → System Information you see the installed and the current version. From firmware 250116, if the version on the update server is outlined in red, click the update button. The M-Center then restarts by itself.
  • Offline: In the firmware update settings, upload the firmware file, wait for the checksum and start the installation.
  • Versions older than 250116: update by USB stick or through the EMU help desk.

In detail, with all three methods: EMU M-Center – firmware update.

Maintenance

How do I back up the configuration?

In the settings for backing up and loading the configuration, the export downloads the entire configuration as a .json file. Loading a configuration file applies a saved configuration – also one from another M-Center or an M-Bus Center.

Back up the configuration after commissioning and after every major change.

Security

Users and passwords

Change the factory password right after the first login: under Profile at the bottom left. An admin can create further users and change their passwords under Settings → User Management.

  • Admin: access to all functions and settings.
  • Operator: sees all devices and measured values and can export, but cannot change settings.
  • User: sees only the devices assigned to them – for example for tenants or external service providers.
  • At least one user must always remain in the Admin group on the M-Center.

Forgot your password?

The password can be reset directly on the device. You need to do two things at once: hold down the Recovery key on the M-Center and start the reset in the web interface.
