Power meter with MQTT: EMU Professional II TCP/IP

The EMU Professional II TCP/IP publishes its readings itself via MQTT. You enter your broker, and the meter sends a JSON message with all energy and instantaneous values at the set interval.

What is a power meter with MQTT?

  • An electricity meter with a network connection that sends its values to an MQTT broker on its own. Dashboards, home automation and cloud services subscribe to them there.
  • The Professional II TCP/IP is MID-certified (module B+D) and measures up to 100 A directly or via current transformers.
  • MQTT from TCP module firmware 3.0.3, with prefix, QoS, upload interval and TLS.
  • The JSON format is documented, with schema and example message for download.
  • Modbus TCP, web interface and load profile via HTTP run in parallel.

Setting up MQTT on the meter

  1. Open the meter’s web interface (the IP address is shown on the display under «Settings» → «IP address») and select the «MQTT» tab.
  2. Switch on «MQTT enabled».
  3. Switch on «Manual» to enter your own broker. Without «Manual», the meter accepts an access code for Joulio-Web and sends directly there.
  4. Set prefix, quality of service and upload interval.
  5. Enter host name, port, user and password of the broker.
  6. For an encrypted connection, activate «Use TLS (SSL)» and store certificate, private key and CA chain.

MQTT is available from TCP module firmware 3.0.3. Older meters can be updated with the EMU TCP Update Tool.

What a message looks like

Each message is a JSON object with client ID, serial number, timestamp, current tariff and the readings under values. The values are integers in small units, for example Wh instead of kWh. Extract from the EMU example message:

{
  "id": "EMU Professional II Demo-Device",
  "sn": "25010203",
  "ts": 1788416910,
  "t": 1,
  "values": {
    "16": 863400,
    "19": 100,
    "20": 863500,
    ...
  }
}

Extract. The complete list with all 106 positions is in the TCP/IP interface manual and in the JSON schema.

Download: JSON schema and example message. Under which topic the message arrives on your broker is visible after the first transmission with an MQTT client such as MQTT Explorer.

Example: Home Assistant

An MQTT sensor reads the import total reading (key 20) and converts it to kWh:

mqtt:
  sensor:
    - name: "Professional II import total"
      state_topic: "<topic of the meter>"
      value_template: "{{ value_json['values']['20'] / 1000 }}"
      unit_of_measurement: kWh
      device_class: energy
      state_class: total_increasing

With device_class: energy and state_class: total_increasing, the sensor can be used directly in the energy dashboard.

MQTT or Modbus TCP?

MQTTModbus TCP
Who starts?the meter sends to the brokerthe client queries the meter

Both run in parallel in the same meter. The Modbus register map is on the power meter with Modbus TCP page.

Frequently asked questions

Which broker does the meter work with?

With your own broker, locally or in the cloud. You enter host name, port, user and password in the web interface, with TLS if required.

In which unit do the values arrive?

As integers: energy in Wh or varh, power in W, current in mA, voltage in 0.1 V, frequency in 0.1 Hz. For kWh, divide the energy by 1000.

Do I need a gateway?

No. The Professional II TCP/IP sends directly to the broker. An M-Center pays off when many meters or other media such as heat and water are added.

Can MQTT also go directly to Joulio-Web?

Yes. Without the «Manual» option, you enter the access code from Joulio-Web, and the meter then sends there automatically.

Is the power meter with MQTT MID-certified?

Yes. The EMU Professional II is approved under MID (module B+D); it measures active energy in class B.
