Integrating EMU meters into Loxone

For Loxone, EMU provides templates for the Professional II in the Loxone Library, one for Modbus TCP and one for RS485. Heat, water and other M-Bus meters are added via the M-Center over Modbus TCP.

Three routes

  • Professional II TCP/IP directly via Modbus TCP on the Miniserver, with EMU template.
  • Professional II RS485 via Modbus RTU on a Loxone Modbus Extension, with EMU template.
  • M-Center via Modbus TCP for all M-Bus meters in the building, including other manufacturers.

Route 1: Professional II TCP/IP via Modbus TCP

The TCP/IP version has a built-in Modbus TCP server. The Miniserver queries the meter directly on the network; no gateway is needed.

  1. Find the IP address of the meter. By default it obtains it via DHCP; it is shown on the meter under «Settings» → «IP address». For operation with Loxone we recommend a fixed address.
  2. In the meter’s web interface, check that «Modbus active» is switched on and note the port.
  3. Import the EMU template for Modbus TCP from the Loxone Library into Loxone Config and enter IP address and port. The slave address of the Professional II TCP/IP is always 1.

The meter updates power, current, voltage, frequency and power factor about every 500 to 900 ms and answers up to four queries at the same time. The TCP timeout is set to 10 seconds by default and can be set between 10 and 600 seconds.

Route 2: Professional II RS485 via Modbus RTU

Where there is no network in the distribution board, the Professional II RS485 runs on the RS-485 bus of a Loxone Modbus Extension. Several meters are daisy-chained on the same line, each with its own Modbus address.

  1. Wire the meters in a line, not in a star, and terminate the line at both ends.
  2. Set the Modbus address and baud rate on the meter, the same baud rate as on the extension.
  3. Import the EMU template for RS485 from the Loxone Library into Loxone Config and enter the address for each meter.

Topology, termination and addressing are explained on the RS-485 / Modbus RTU page.

Route 3: M-Bus meters via the M-Center

Heat, cooling and water meters mostly speak M-Bus. The M-Center reads them and provides the values with the Modbus TCP server licence (210.300.04). In Loxone you create the M-Center as a Modbus TCP device and read holding registers:

ValueOBIS codeRegister float32
Cold water, volume8-0:1.0.03000
Hot water, volume9-0:1.0.03030
Heat meter, meter reading4-0:1.0.04060
Heat meter, flow temperature4-0:3.1.04120
Electricity, import tariff 11-0:1.8.11030

Prerequisite: the OBIS code is entered for the registers in the M-Center. The device address is the «Modbus TCP Server device number» of the respective meter. Data type float32, big endian, high word first. The manual counts registers from 1; check with a known meter reading whether Loxone expects the address offset by one.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I get the Loxone templates?

In the Loxone Library under EMU Electronic AG. According to the manual, the Professional II delivers its values as unsigned integer or float. For values with 2 registers (32 bit) and 4 registers (64 bit), the register order must be reversed in Loxone.

TCP/IP or RS485?

TCP/IP if there is a network connection in the distribution board. RS485 if several meters sit close together and a Modbus Extension is available.

Can I connect heat meters directly to Loxone?

M-Bus meters need an M-Bus master. The M-Center takes on this role and passes the values to the Miniserver via Modbus TCP.
