Reactive energy meter with METAS approval

Anyone who bills reactive energy or monitors a compensation system needs an approved meter for it. The EMU Professional II measures active and reactive energy in one device, the reactive energy with METAS type examination to IEC 62053-23.

Key facts

  • METAS type examination certificate for reactive energy to IEC 62053-23: CH-CH003-20029-03.
  • METAS module D for production quality assurance: 6030-01233.
  • Reactive energy import and export, each in up to four tariffs.
  • Active energy MID B+D in the same device.
  • Reactive energy also in the load profile, in tariff 1 and 2.

Why measure reactive energy?

Motors, transformers, fluorescent lamps and drives draw reactive power from the grid in addition to active power. It loads cables and transformers without doing any work. Many grid operators therefore bill reactive energy when it exceeds an agreed share of the active energy.

Anyone who recharges internally, for example in a business park, or wants to check that the compensation system works correctly needs a sub-meter that measures reactive energy reliably and with approval.

According to the manual, the Professional II is intended for three-phase measurement of imported and exported reactive energy to EN 62053. These measurements may be used for billing purposes. The 3/100 version measures reactive energy in class 2.

What the meter records

  • Reactive energy import and export, total and in up to four tariffs
  • Reactive power total and per phase as instantaneous value
  • Quadrant display on the screen: whether active and reactive energy are currently imported or exported
  • Reactive energy import and export in tariff 1 and 2 in the load profile memory

Via the M-Center, the reactive energy values sit at fixed Modbus addresses when an OBIS code is entered: reactive energy import total (1-0:3.8.0) from register 1300, export total (1-0:4.8.0) from register 1450.

Direct connection or current transformers?

Up to 100 A per phase, the 3/100 version measures directly. Larger installations, where reactive energy usually matters most, are measured by the 3/5 version via current transformers with 5 A or 1 A secondary.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Professional II approved for reactive energy?

Yes. It holds a METAS type examination certificate for reactive energy to IEC 62053-23 (CH-CH003-20029-03) and the METAS module D approval for production (6030-01233).

Does the meter measure inductive and capacitive reactive energy?

It measures reactive energy in import and export and shows on the display in which quadrant it is currently measuring.

Can I record reactive energy separately by tariff?

Yes, in up to four tariffs, just like active energy.
